Cyclones Unable to Skate Past Richmond, 5-4

November 19, 2008
Winston-Salem, NC

For the first game of the week, the Cyclones traveled to Richmond to face off against the Renegades. Still looking to begin the ascent out of last place, the Cyclones almost achieved their goal.
Twin City struck first with a goal at 5:44 from Chris Tutalo (Melnyk, Richard). Matt Puntureri added another for the Cyclones at 14:49 (Melnyk, Wagner). But, the celebration would be short-lived as the Renegades got on the board at 15:21 and again at 19:04 to knot the game at two heading into the middle stanza.
The second period was an active one. Richmond's John Halverson got a shot past Terry Dunbar at 13:47, but Taylor Hustead answered with a powerplay goal for the Cyclones at 16:00 (Sirois, Melnyk). The momentum swung back in Richmond's favor as Ryan Busby was able to add a shorthanded goal at 16:32 to give the Renegades the lead again. Hustead replied with yet another powerplay goal at 17:51 to finish out the period and tie the game at four.
The final period was almost the opposite of the second with only one goal being scored. Jason Price was able to get one more goal for the Renegades to give them the 5-4 victory.
The Cyclones will be back at home tomorrow night for Thirsty Thursday. Come out and enjoy the beverage specials as the Cyclones welcome the Huntsville Havoc. Game time is at 7:30PM.

Cyclones Sign Defenseman Smith

Winston Salem, NC

Twin City Cyclones’ General Manager Sean Cowan announced the signing today of Russell Smith, 24, a defenseman who played most recently with the New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League.

Smith, who was a college teammate of current Cyclones’ player Michael Richard, had a seven game stint with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL at the end of the 2007-08 season immediately after finishing his college career. He signed and played 11 games with New Mexico this year before joining the Cyclones.

The defenseman, who was born in Annapolis, Maryland, played four years of college hockey at Elmira College in New York before turning professional.  His size, height--6.04 and weight-- 220 and previous pro experience will add both strength and experience to the Cyclones defensive corps,  Smith, a left-handed shooter recorded one assist and had 37 penalty minutes in his 11 games with New Mexico this season.

Cyclones’ Head Coach Mark Richards reacted positively to Smith’s acquisition. “Anytime you can add size and mobility to your blue line it is a big plus. Russell has the potential to be an excellent contributor to our team.”  He is expected to be in the line-up when the Cyclones face the Richmond Renegades on Wednesday night.
